Black Bean Brownies

Okay so I don’t have dessert often but when I do it MUST taste incredible! Sometimes this means going for an option that’s not a ‘‘healthy’’ dessert because let’s be honest, raw treats rarely taste that incredible! I prefer to have the real deal less often and enjoy every bite. This brownie however actually sneaks in some health benefits as well as tasting amazing!

I’ve used black beans which keeps the brownie nice and moist but also increases the protein and fibre. Combining this with the anti-oxidants and polyphenols from the cacao and chocolate means you are actually having a dessert that is good for you, just don’t eat the whole thing at once :P

Makes 15 serves


1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup almond meal
1/3 cup cacao powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 eggs
¼ cup macadamia oil
1/2 cup sugar/maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup milk (almond/coconut/rice, soy)
100g 85% dark chocolate, roughly chopped


Preheat the oven to 180⁰C. Blitz the beans in a food processor or mash really well. Put the beans in a mixing bowl and add the baking powder, almond meal, cacao powder, salt and cinnamon to the beans.  In another bowl whisk the eggs, then add the oil, maple syrup, vanilla and milk and combine. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix. Add in the chocolate and stir through.

Pour into a baking tin, lined with baking paper and cook for 25-30 minutes or until the top is just cooked. Remove from the oven and let sit for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
